Basic Cutting Methods
Straight Edge Cutting
Position your ruler firmly along the cutting line. Hold your craft knife at a consistent angle and apply steady pressure while pulling the blade toward you. Use multiple light passes rather than one heavy cut for cleaner results.
Curved Cuts
For curved lines, rotate the paper rather than the blade. Make small, controlled cuts and gradually work your way around the curve. Keep the blade perpendicular to the surface for even depth.
Scoring Techniques
Use a scoring tool or the back of a craft knife to create fold lines. Apply gentle pressure to create a groove without cutting through. Score on the inside of the fold for crisp, clean edges.
Advanced Methods
Layered Cutting
Create depth by cutting multiple layers at different depths. Start with the top layer and work downward, adjusting blade depth for each level.
Intricate Patterns
For detailed patterns, use a sharp blade and work slowly. Support the paper around the cutting area to prevent tearing. Take breaks to maintain precision.
Folding Techniques
Mountain Folds
Score the paper first, then fold upward so the crease forms a peak. Use a bone folder or similar tool to press the fold firmly for a sharp edge.
Valley Folds
Fold the paper downward so the crease creates a valley. Score on the top side before folding. Press along the entire length for consistency.
Safety Tips
Proper Grip
Hold your cutting tool with a relaxed but firm grip. Keep fingers away from the blade path and use a cutting mat to protect surfaces.
Blade Maintenance
Replace blades regularly to maintain sharpness. Dull blades require more pressure and increase the risk of accidents.
Workspace Safety
Keep your workspace clean and well-lit. Store tools safely when not in use and always cut away from your body.
